The erstwhile rulers of Hyderabad, Nizams led a lavish life enjoying music and dance at their palace. Since then performing arts are the main source of entertainment to the Nizams. Carnatic music is the most revered music of the city which is believed to have some divine origin, people has a belief that it is originated from God. Its natural origin has a root in ancient discourses which shows the correlation of the origin of musical notations to the animals and birds’ sound.
The ragas of Carnatic music are said to call upon the divine energy.Ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles) are the main souls of the carnatic music. It has seven rhythmic cycles and 72 fundamental ragas.

Andhra Pradesh is home to 3 main gurus of carnatic music--saint Tyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri. Though the new generation has lost interest in this music, yet it is practiced widely by the veterans. Traditional filmy music of Tamil and Telegu is quite popular in the state. Pop and hip-hop is quite famous among the youngsters.
Dance is a part of their social life, various classical and semi-classical dance forms are found here, yet the most renowned one is Kuchipudi, a blend of abhinaya (acting) and music. Perini, a unique form of Shiva Taandavam (dance of Lord Shiva) also originates in this state. It is originated as a warrior dance and performed by all male groups.
