Being the oldest and the biggest of the mosque in Hyderabad city, Mecca Masjid is a much visited religious place in the city. A total of 10,000 people can pray at this mosque. It is said that its construction was started by Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah and it was later completed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1694. 8000 workers altogether completed the construction of this mosque. It is just 100 yards from the historical Charminar.

People have a belief that it is named as Mecca because some of the bricks were brought from the holy place Mecca which was used in the main arch of the mosque. Fifteen arches support the hall of the mosque. The great hall of the mosque is 75 feet high, 220 feet wide and 180 feet long.
While visiting this mosque one will see numerous sermons from the Quran depicted on the arches of the Masjid. It has a man made pond which has peaceful surroundings. The courtyard of the mosque houses ancient and holy relics. It is believed that hair of the Prophet Mohammad is here inside the room.
