Golconda fort is on the top of the list while tourists are visiting Hyderabad. It is located at a distance of 11 kilometers west of Hyderabad city. It is a symbol of 400 years cultural heritage of the city. It is a worth visiting site in Hyderabad. Built on a 120 meter high granite hill Golconda Fort catches one’s glance at first sight. The fort has 8 spectacular gates, of which the main gate is called Fateh Darwaza. The hill on the backdrop of the fort adds mysterious charm to the fort. This fort was built by Qutub Shahi kings who ruled during the 16th century. It is towering 120 meters height with four forts inside it surrounded by a wall.

Legend says, the place is originally Golla Konda in Telegu, in 1143 a shepherd boy got an idol on the rocky hill called Mangalavaram', he later gave it to the then king Kakatiya who built a mud fort here. Later the mud fort was transformed into a marvelous granite wonder. During the time of Mughal invasion, Golconda lost its beauty as the invaders plundered it.
Famous for its diamond mines, Golconda is known worldwide; it is believed that the precious Kohinoor diamond was extracted from here.
While visiting this fort in Hyderabad, one can enjoy the light and sound show which tells the history behind the creation of Golconda Fort till to its invasion by the Mughals.
